The term was originally known as mashing but H.R, the lead singer of Bad Brains, would say mosh due to his Jamaican accent and that is how the term stuck. Bad Brains is the band credited with putting moshing on people’s radar. Punk rock and heavy metal concerts were where moshing would occur. Moshing first came from hardcore music in the United States during the 80s. Moshing usually occurs in the center of the crowd, close to the stage, in an area called the “pit”. The point of moshing is to be energetic and have contact with other people.
